Emergency Exit Device
A emergency exit device is usually a mechanical device or piece if door hardware that can be operated from the inside of an outwards opening exit door to always allow the possibility of exit in an emergency, often through the use of a crossbar or push rail that extends across the door width. Such devices may be connected to fire alarm or security systems which might be activated when used.
The Code of practice: Hardware for fire and escape doors, Issue 5, published by DHF and GAI in November 2024, defines an emergency exit device as 'an exit device operated with a lever handle or push / pull pad on the inside of the door and for use where panic situations are not foreseen, such as non-public areas, offices, factories etc.'
